When One Size Doesn’t Fit All - Finding the right school for a SEND child

As the deadline for school applications approaches, many of us are filled with excitement at the thought of our children moving onto the next step towards adulthood and independence. For SEND parents however (and I myself am in this bracket), the thought is pretty terrifying.

Choosing the right school for a child with special educational needs and disabilities can feel like an impossible decision. Parents are often asked to make a choice based on what their child needs today, while knowing that those needs may look very different six months or even six weeks from now. A child’s presentation can change constantly. Their communication, sensory needs, emotional regulation, academic abilities and ability to cope with the demands of school can all fluctuate. What works beautifully at one stage may suddenly stop working. A child who once managed a mainstream environment may begin to struggle with the sensory, social or academic demands, while another child may develop new skills or become ready for opportunities they previously could not access.

The decision can become even more complicated when schools have different environments, levels of support, teaching approaches and expectations. A setting that appears perfect on paper may not necessarily be the right fit for a particular child. Equally, a school that initially seems unsuitable may actually have the flexibility and understanding to adapt as that child develops.

For parents, there can be an enormous amount of pressure attached to the decision. There is the fear of choosing the wrong environment, of moving a child and causing unnecessary disruption, or of not recognising what they will need in the future. It can feel as though one decision carries the responsibility for a child's happiness, education and wellbeing. And oh, the guilt we feel when things don’t work out and the school we thought would work turns out to not be the best option!

Sometimes, the most loving and difficult decision a parent can make is to acknowledge that their child's needs have outgrown what their current school can provide and it is time to look for alternatives. Moving schools can be incredibly daunting. It can mean leaving behind trusted staff, friendships and routines, while asking a child to cope with another huge transition. Yet sometimes a new environment, different approach or greater level of support is exactly what a child needs to thrive.

There is no perfect formula for choosing a school for a child with SEND. Parents are often making decisions based on what they know at that moment, while trying to anticipate needs that may change in the future.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that choosing a school is not about finding one school that will always be perfect. It is about finding a setting that can meet your child's needs at each stage of their journey and if necessary, having the courage to reassess when those needs change. This comes from someone who has been through 3 primary schools and 2 secondary schools before (hopefully) finding the best fit!

Our children are not static. Their needs, strengths and challenges can evolve, sometimes unexpectedly. That is what makes them so special.
